Building on Your Past (Genesis 29:14-30:24)

Today, we begin a new message series called “Keep Your Dream Alive.” Every person has a dream, although not everyone knows what that dream is. The dream we’re going to be talking about in this message series is your special, unique dream that God has for your life. People have all kinds of dreams that are not from God. Some people dream of winning the lottery. Others dream of great accomplishments that never happen. Others dream of things that are ungodly. But God has a dream and plan for your life that He wants you to keep alive and live out.

Ephesians 2:10 (NIV)  For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.

God created every believer for a purpose, to accomplish good works with your life. That dream of accomplishing great things for God can become reality because God has made all the preparations for it to happen. Catch that last phrase in the verse. “God prepared in advance good works for you to do.” So often, we get caught up in the little things that we have to do in life and we lose sight of the dream that God has for us. Sometimes we give up on God’s dream for us. If you give up on God’s dream for you , you will never fulfill it. So, today, God wants to encourage you to keep your dream alive.

Our new message series for the fall “Keep Your Dream Alive” is about the story of Joseph, found in Genesis 37-50. I’d encourage you to read through those chapters as we go through the series. One of the main things we’re going to learn as we go through Joseph’s story is that there are three phases regarding dreams. First of all, you got to discover your dream in order to live it out. Secondly, often, as in the case of Joseph, opposition arises and it appears that the dream has died and won’t be fulfilled. But, if you keep the dream alive in your heart, it can be resurrected and finally fulfilled in your life. We see these three phases of a dream reflected in Joseph’s life.

Today’s message is entitled “Building on Your Past.” In order to build on your dream, you’ve got to believe that a dream exists and that God wants you to know that dream. One major area that keeps people from achieving their dreams is their past. Have you ever felt that if only you had come from a different family your life would have been better or easier? Or perhaps you can’t stop thinking of problems from the past that are preventing you from following your dream.

As we begin Joseph’s story today, we’re going to see how God works in even what seem to be difficult circumstances to make his dream for Joseph live. What God did for Joseph, He can do for you. The Lord is the same, yesterday, today and forever.
