Jesus Our Peace (John 14:1-27)

Happy New Year! 2014 is just around the corner. I’m grateful for a new year to serve God and see Him do great things in our lives and church. What do you see when you look to the future in 2014? A national poll taken last week showed that 29% of people think our country is headed in the right direction and 64% think it is on the wrong track. I think if we do an honest assessment, our country has some problems and troubles. That shouldn’t surprise us. To the degree that we have departed from God’s standards in our country, we are going to have increased troubles.

However, as believers, should the troubles in our country depress us or should they give us reason for hope? The Bible teaches us that troubles are an opportunity for God and His people to make an impact. God allows troubles to come so that people will turn to Him and His church for help in their lives. I believe that no matter how difficult the troubles around us may be in 2014, that God can give us peace in the midst of those troubles.

Today, my message is entitled “Jesus Our Peace.” We’re going to see how Jesus can bring peace into our lives no matter what is going on around us.

John 16:33 (NIV)  “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”

I want to have peace this New Year, don’t you? How can we have that peace? By trusting in the Lord, even in the midst of trouble. An anxious or worried mind is not stable and has no peace. But when we trust God, He will keep us in peace no matter the troubles around us. At New Year’s time, many people get hung up with New Year’s resolutions, most of which don’t last till the end of January. That doesn’t help with our peace either. God wants you to make some resolutions this New Year about trusting in Him in every aspect of your life. To trust God is to allow Him to take care of you as you follow Him, rather than trying to do everything yourself.

This morning, we’re going to look at the last “I Am” statement of Jesus in our series “The Child Who Changed the World Forever.”

John 14:6a (NIV)  Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life.

You see, Jesus has a way for you through this New Year. Jesus has a way for you through the rest of your life. In fact, Jesus has a way for you to spend eternity with Him in heaven. Each of us is at different stages in the journey of life. As we learn to trust Jesus to get us to our ultimate destination, we can experience His peace in our lives. The journey may have some troubles. You may experience some difficulties this New Year. But if you stay close to Jesus, the way, you’re going to make it. So, let’s see what Jesus has to say to us about the New Year 2014.
