A Blessed Father (Psalm 112)

Happy Father’s Day! We’re glad that you have come to celebrate the day with us. Father’s Day is a day where we first of all give thanks to our heavenly Father for giving us the gift of fathers. Whether you had a great father or one who was lacking in some areas, the fact is that your father helped give you the gift of life. And that is a gift from God.

Ephesians 3:14-15 (NIV2011)  For this reason I kneel before the Father,  from whom every family in heaven and on earth derives its name.

We give praise to our heavenly Father who has given every family in heaven and earth a father.

Let’s pray.  Father in heaven, we thank you for the gift of these fathers. Those you have chosen to bring your children into the world. Father, we pray that you would give them wisdom in raising their children for you. May they follow your guidance in leading their families in your ways. May your blessing be upon each one of these fathers and their families. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Today, my message is entitled “A Blessed Father.” Some here today hope to be fathers in the future. Others are fathers with children at home, still others have grown children and even grandchildren. This message is for you, no matter what stage in life you are in as a father. And for all the rest of you here today, the principles that make a father blessed will make any person blessed. So, listen up, for God wants you to live a life of blessing.

Psalm 37:26 (NIV)  They [righteous fathers] are always generous and lend freely; their children will be blessed.

When a father is blessed by God, he in turn blesses others. When a father is blessed by God, his children will be blessed as well. Blessed children come from blessed fathers and we need more of both in our world today.

Today, we’re going to look at Psalm 112 in the Old Testament to learn about how to be a blessed father. Psalm 111, immediately before this psalm speaks of the faithfulness of God, our heavenly Father, Both Psalm 111 and 112 are acrostic psalms, each stanza beginning with another letter of the Hebrew alphabet. God was intimately involved in the inspiration of these two psalms and wants us to learn today more about what it means to be a blessed father. Perhaps today, there are some who have fathers who are far from being blessed fathers. I trust that what we learn this morning will give you encouragement to pray for them and believe God that they too can be blessed fathers.
