Investing Your Life (Matthew 25)

Investing Your Life Message Introduction

Basic Training is the current message series. What are we training for? We are training as soldiers in the army of the Lord. Now, we don’t fight with bullets or bombs. But we do fight. We fight with spiritual weapons. What are we fighting for? We are fighting to expand the kingdom of God and to destroy the kingdom of darkness. How does that happen? It happens as your friends, relatives and neighbors get saved and in turn become soldiers in the Lord’s army. And as we fight in God’s army, God takes care of everything that we need.

Matthew 6:33 (NIV)  But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.

When you are seeking first to expand God’s kingdom, when you are seeking to be the best soldier you can be, than God will meet every need that you have in life.

Today our message is entitled “Investing Your Life.” A soldier invests everything that he has, in order to be the best soldier he can be. When a soldier comes to basic training, he leaves behind all of his civilian things. He is given a uniform, boots, a weapon, an instruction manual, a lot of training and a haircut. As he learns more, he will be given more responsibility, such as operating larger weapons systems or commanding a company of soldiers. He must use the resources entrusted to him to carry out his mission. The safety of the other soldiers as well as the well-being of his country depend on it.

A soldier in God’s army is much the same. He must obey his commanding officer, Jesus Christ, without question. He must not get entangled in civilian affairs that would jeopardize his mission. Finally, he must use the resources entrusted to him to carry out God’s mission.

2 Timothy 2:3-4 (NIV)  Endure hardship with us like a good soldier of Christ Jesus.  No one serving as a soldier gets involved in civilian affairs–he wants to please his commanding officer.

It’s not easy being a good soldier of Christ, there is hardship to endure, there are things that you can no longer be involved in, as you follow the orders of your commanding officer. Today, we’re going to be talking about putting to work everything that God has entrusted to you to carry out His mission.

We’re going to be looking at a parable that Jesus taught in Matthew 25. In the chapter before, Matthew 24, Jesus taught on the signs of the end of the age, when He would return.

Matthew 25:1 (NIV)  “At that time the kingdom of heaven will be like …

So this parable will relate to what the kingdom will be like at the return of Christ. We’re going to learn how what we do today, affects both now and eternity.
