Practice God’s Word (James 1:19-25)

Currently we’re in a message series called “Goals 2013.” As we begin the New Year of 2013, God wants us to have goals in our lives, so that we can make progress this year in serving Him. For a believer, life is about doing God’s will. What does it mean to do God’s will?

Doing God’s will is simply discovering God’s goals for your life and then accomplishing those goals with His help. Accomplishing God’s goals for your life is the most important thing that a person can do. Accomplishing God’s goals for your life will enhance your life, the lives of people close to you and will impact eternity.

In this series, we are looking are five basic areas that God desires every believer to grow in. The past two Sundays, we’ve looked at growing in our relationship with God through prayer. We’ve also looked at growing in our relationships with other believers in the church body.

Today my message is entitled “Practice God’s Word.” The Bible is God’s handbook for life. The Bible is God’s Word. In this book, God has revealed information about Himself and about people that is available in no other way. In order to accomplish God’s goals for your life, you will need to both study and apply the principles of the Bible to your life.

The Bible is an amazing and absolutely unique book. It was written over a 1500 year span by more than forty authors in different places. Yet it presents a single unfolding of a story – God’s redemption of human beings and His instructions on how we should live to fulfill His purpose for our lives. In the past, the mark of an educated person was his knowledge of the Bible. Today, you can get a PhD in most disciplines without even being required to open the most famous book in human history. Knowledge of the Bible is at an all-time low. However, you don’t have to remain ignorant of the Bible. A wise person understands that knowledge of the Bible is one of the most important things you can have in life.

Psalm 119:72 (NIV) The law from your mouth is more precious to me than thousands of pieces of silver and gold.

Which would you pick? Winning the lottery or understanding God’s Word? The right choice is understanding God’s Word. To use the Bible to help you reach God’s goals for you in 2013, you’ve first got to make a decision to believe whatever God tells you in the Bible. Do you believe the Bible? Do you believe in God who wrote the Bible? Faith is a choice of your will. As you choose to believe the Bible, you will begin to see wonderful results in your life.

Today, I want to look at how to practice God’s Word to accomplish God’s goals for you.
