This week is July 4, the celebration of the founding of our country. Our country was founded on a foundation of biblical principles, even though not every founder was a believer. This biblical foundation is one of the reasons that God has blessed America over the past 236 years. Although many today call into question this biblical foundation, the historical facts cannot be discounted.
God certainly was involved in the founding of America. Yet, if our founding fathers would transported in a time machine from 1776 to 2012, I wonder what they would think. Many today believe that we have progressed far beyond the outdated beliefs of 1776. I agree that the abolishment of slavery was a significant step of progress. Yet, I think that our founding fathers would be appalled at what goes on in America today, all in the name of freedom. As a nation, we have forgotten the biblical foundation, the biblical compass that defines right and wrong for us individually and as a country.
Today, my message is entitled “What America Needs.” I submit to you today, that what America needs is to return to the truth of God’s Word. As a nation, we have lost our moral compass, we have lost the ability to determine what is right and what is wrong. Every generation seems to slip further down the slippery slope of defining for themselves what is morally acceptable.
Perhaps, this morning you agree with me, but feel that the situation is hopeless. What can you and I do to bring about change in America, the change that God wants to see? Actually, I believe that it is believers who will determine that future fate of America.
2 Chronicles 7:14 (NIV) if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land.
Rather than complain about the awful state of our nation, God here challenges His people to do something about what is going on in their land. The Lord says we are to do four things, humble ourselves, pray, seek God’s face and turn from our wicked ways. Then God will do three things, hear from heaven, forgive our sin and heal our land.
