We need strong families today, because weak families are fragmenting in America at an alarming rate. The average marriage in America lasts 7½ years. Sixty percent of all second marriages fail. Every 30 seconds there is a divorce in America.
I don’t want that to happen to you or your family. In fact I don’t just want your family to just stay together, I want it to grow strong. Why? So that it can accomplish the unique purpose that God has for your family. You see, God doesn’t just have a purpose for each person in your family individually, He has a purpose for your family to accomplish together.
In order to have a strong family, you must build it on a foundation of godly values with God’s help. Today, my message is called simply “Honoring Parents.” We’re going to be talking about the 5th commandment, which says …
Exodus 20:12 (NIV) Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the LORD your God is giving you.
This commandment has a promise attached to it. You will live long on the earth. Your life will not be cut short. You will fulfill God’s purpose. Honoring your father and mother relates to both parents and children. Many of us are parents. All of us are children. we are to honor our parents.
